I heard "Working for the Weekend" this morning on the radio, which immediately reminded me that Todd B. christened a certain mutual acquaintance "Loverboy" based on his haircut resembling that of one of the members of the band. Which called to mind the other nicknames for this person: 1980's Character (also a Todd creation), Cowboy, Confectionery Boy. Why so many nicknames for one person? Well, I did borderline stalk him for about three years. And I hooked up with him twice, and would've slept with him that one time if he hadn't chickened out, jerk. Maybe he's been fresh in my mind lately with all the Daniel Radcliffe Equus scandal--I remember us talking about the play once, and vaguely recall him either wanting to play or having played the psychiatrist...but it's a fuzzy memory at best. I Google him from time to time, just to see if he's attained Master Thespian status--and nothing since 2000 comes up. Which means he's probably not onstage much, a shame because he was pretty good. (Or at least I thought so at the time, being under his thrall and all.) You know, I Google my freshman year boyfriend occasionally as well, and nothing at all comes up. I guess I'm just used to seeing my name come up when I Google myself (with an eponymous business website, duh)--and Mark's too, since he's responsible for daily internet content. (Featurning that old picture of him that makes him look sixteen and chubby.) Oh well...

The show premieres tomorrow night (and closes Friday night), and I think we're in good shape. There are a few phrases I really want to nitpick vocally tomorrow afternoon--it's just such difficult music to sing, I can never stop improving on it!--and I need to buy some black knee-highs to replace the ones that KEEP FALLING DOWN ONSTAGE!!, but all will be well. Have I mentioned I get to break a glass pitcher onstage? It's not difficult to act surprised every night when it shatters. (There was a problem with the set change the other night, and my friend singing Gretel unfortunately ended up with a booty full of glass when she sat on the stage. Hopefully this will not happen again.) I will not miss all the hours in the car, but I will miss being in a show. And I don't have anything else lined up right now, unfortunately. Got to get working on that!

Have I mentioned that my parents and grandparents are coming on Friday? It's a G----- Family Convoy! (I can't promise that there will be a Hoagie Supper following...there is an invite-only cast party, after all.)

By the way, one of my costars (a 6'3" 23-year old man) asked me to teach him to knit the other day. I started very basic--cable cast-on and garter stitch--and gave him some cotton yarn and size 7 needles to make himself a potholder/dishcloth. The next day he told me he'd already bought yarn and size 15 needles to make a scarf. I was so proud. Knitting is contagious!

Friday, February 16

As promised, here's my progress so far on Sandra's baby blanket:

And here's a detail of the pattern:

The yarn is very soft and machine-washable. (Acrylic, 'cuz that's how I roll, yo--I stay away from most animal fibers because of allergies and sensitive skin. Plus why would you chance it with a baby?) It really is taking a long time because of the gauge, but it will be done well in advance of the due date.

Speaking of which, my rehearsal schedule has changed, so now it looks like I can make it to some of her shower after all. (I haven't been to one in about fifteen years--do they still do that game where you can't say the word "baby"?)

Mark and I had a relaxing dinner last night at this upscale Greek place. It was quite good (and the waiters were hottt, yes indeed), but I think I will stick with my two favorite Mediterranean places... Sometimes I just want the platter with tabbouleh and hummus, you know? Oh, and he liked the plates I bought. I daresay I will stop by there this afternoon and pick up some more. (See?! The Evil Empire is sucking me back in! But no mas after today, seriously, or else the MoveOn.org police will revoke my "bleeding-heart" card, and that would be bad.) Mark bought me some roses--very fragrant orange ones. They are lovely.

I must get ready for my trek to rehearsal, but I must add: I really like the word "ragamuffin". But only when used innocuously.

Thursday, February 15

Two days in a row! I rock.

First off, I must say that I went to John Mayer's website and I actually like John Mayer, despite the fact that he looks like a would-be member of the now-defunct Pine Bush-Ellenville band Pleasure Dome. Yes, I probably would've had a crush on him in high school. (And he is our age, mysteriously.)

Whenever I think of Pleasure Dome ("Why did you leave me/When I still love you now?") I still wonder at the name. We in the know were aware that Ed M. was referencing "Kublai Khan", but who's to say the general public wouldn't think they were a Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen cover band? (Crappy song, by the way.)

I am very tired, even though I got a full night's sleep. I always get headaches in the late morning/early afternoon unless I eat an enormous lunch, possibly including caffeine. Maybe it has something to do with spending this time of day in a windowless room that's painted a shade darker than drab green. A nice color for a shirt or an accent wall, perhaps, but the entire office is painted this color. Food for thought...

Wanna hear the most ridiculous V-Day story ever? Picture it: 10:30 PM, a small-town Super Walmart just off the interstate, and I am trying on crappy pleather high-heeled boots. Why, do you ask? Because I am on the figurative crack. (I make the distinction only because this sounds like something someone on drugs would do...) This is what happens when you wait until the day in question to pick up something for your boo, and the Barnes and Noble had an incredibly long line when I tried to go there before my rehearsal. Mark had half-jokingly suggested I could spend no more than $3.50 on him, so where else should I go but the Evil Empire? And even though their greeting cards usually suck ass, I found a really good one. I couldn't for the life of me find an appropriate gift--I was waiting for something cheesy to jump out at me, and nothing did--so I finally decided to break down and buy these Corelle plates we'd been talking about getting. They were supposed to be about $24, but they rang up for $5. I brought it to the cashier's attention, and they didn't care... Ah, the many ethical dilemmas of shopping at the Evil Empire. Yet another reason not to shop there.

Anyway, tonight we are going out to a yet-undetermined location, and Mark will hopefully like the card and the plates and the sweatshop-made shirt I bought him... (Evil!)

Awright, back to work!

Wednesday, February 14

I feel the need to be more diligent about my blog. I read all these knitters' blogs (see additions at right) and see how good they are about updating with pictures of their progress...I am jealous. Granted I'm busy, but I do sit at a desk for twenty hours a week--and I'm certainly not spending all that time working. Maybe if I spent less time on the singers' forum and PerezHilton.com I'd actually return emails and update my blog daily... So I'm going to be better about updating. At least three times a week I will at least post a link to something silly. Isn't the purpose of this damn blog to let y'all know what I'm up to?

And what I've been up to is rehearsal. And not so much rehearsal, but driving to and from rehearsal. If you count my round-trip office commute, I'm spending nearly four hours a day in the car. I'm buying gas every other day. I'm eating crap. This is not a positive turn of events. The show is going well--don't get me wrong--but the drive is killing me. The audio books have helped--I really liked Jane Eyre (why didn't I read this book years ago? Probably because I didn't like Wuthering Heights, namely I didn't see why Heathcliff was this big ol' romantic hero when I thought he was just a dick, and I figured one Bronte was as good as another. Not true!) and right now I'm listening to Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut, which is subversive fun. Friday I will start I, Robot. (I saw the movie, but I'm sure the book is better.) I probably won't need another audio book before next Friday (our last performance), but who knows? I really like having them, and they make the drive go much faster. I should download books off NetLibrary and put them on my MP3 player to listen to on the road all the time. But I'm off-topic--all the late nights (and aforementioned eating of crap) are really taking a toll...I'm exhausted all the time, and snapping at Mark, and I constantly have a headache and intermittent mild nausea. It's honestly just exacerbating problems I've had for months. I'm really looking forward to that doctor's appointment next week--maybe she'll order some bloodwork and tell me what's wrong, finally.

So it's Valentine's Day. I took the day off from the office (I needed the rest, plus the laundry is piling up) but I have rehearsal at 6:30--which means leaving the house at 3:30 so I can buy Mark a card and beat rush hour traffic, and getting home tonight around midnight. Mark left this morning around nine and won't be home until after I leave for rehearsal. How romantic. Not that I put much stock in Hallmark holidays anyway, but it would be nice to have a conversation with him while the sun is up. I'm working tomorrow but have no rehearsal, so we'll hopefully be able to have a nice dinner or something.

Speaking of Valentine's Day, I had a sexy dream about John Mayer last night. Where this came from I had no idea. He's more my type than Will Ferrell (who I had a comparatively X-rated dream about last month, ew!), but still not really. I'm barely aware of him, honestly. What the hell is going on in my brain? I guess I have to get the energy out somewhere.

Knitting news, as promised: I finally finished a sweater for myself last week! I bought this super-soft cream colored boucle yarn in December, anticipating I'd make myself a particular sweater with a moderately intricate lace pattern and a bunch of shaping. After working on this sweater nonstop for a month, I finally tried it on--and it was FIVE SIZES TOO BIG!!! What the hell?! I did a gauge swatch and everything! So I said fuck it, pulled the whole thing out (what I learned: never sew in your ends until you're sure!), and made myself an entirely different sweater--this time from an awesome 1977-vintage book I picked up at the last local library sale. The book is called Make it with Mademoiselle (as in the magazine), and not only does it include knitting and crochet patterns, but a dozen ways to tie a headscarf, basic clothing patterns and 101+ ways to decorate with sheets. Plus none of the models are wearing bras--the only way you can tell some of the patterns are from the '70s, honestly. (I'm glad people are wearing bras again!) Anyway, the sweater is totally cute (and a lot more my style than the first one I knit), and I got nothing but compliments on it last Friday when I wore it. (Another lesson learned: patterns that seem three sizes too small will probably fit you.) I will try to remember to post a picture of it. Right now I'm working on an afghan for my friend Sandra's baby (due in May--and it may take that long, the gauge is so small), and over the weekend I dashed off some washcloths/burpcloths with an OM motif (Sandra is into Bikram, crazy lady that she is) for her shower next Sunday. Which I will be unable to attend because, of course, I will be in rehearsal for eight hours that day. Not counting driving. Ugh, I don't want to think about it any more!

Also on the knitting front, I made some squares for Project Linus over the weekend, using stitches from a book I got from my sister-in-law for Christmas. I have to mail those tomorrow, along with some hats I made for a first-grade class in the Bronx that I never got around to mailing. I also want to make some scarves for the National WWII Museum... Well, I guess I'm staying busy enough.
